investigators. bob, tell us exactly what happened here. >> good morning to you, peggy. this happened about five hours ago, just after midnight. two vehicles you can see one behind me across almaden expressway. they collided and under other circumstances this scene would already be clear because it did happen five hours ago. the driver of that suburban, that vehicle, that first vehicle you just saw is in such serious condition. police officer with san jose police tells us that their condition is life threatening and they're afraid this person might not make it, that they might die. if that happens, they would have to bring in an accident death investigation team out here, so that's why they're preserving the scene. because if that person doesn't survive, they'll need to get a new group of investigators out here hence why they don't want to clear the scene yet. that vehicle to the left of the black suburban is in serious condition, but that person's injuries are not life

threatening. both drivers were the only people in the car and both men and that's all the information san jose police has about them right now. they do not know if alcohol was involved. that would be part of the investigation to determine whether or not that was the cause. as far as your commute goes, part of the intersection is open and the part i'm talking about is the southbound direction on almaden expressway. it is reverse commute, you can get through coleman. it's the northbound direction shut down and then coleman going across almaden still shut down, as well. as far as when they're going to reopen this, they don't know because they're waiting to find out whether or not the driver of that black suburban is going to make it. bob redell, "today nin bin the " developing news in redwood city. piecing the events leading up to a deadly sail boat crash. the boat was taking part in a race last night when it struck a buoy. coast guard arrived and, appare apparently, someone on there helped administer cpr and all five others were onboard. the others that weren't injured helped flee that damaged boat. this morning we see redwood city police coming and going and overall fairly quiet this morning. we do have calls into the coast guard. as soon as i hear from them about updates, i'll let you know what they have to say. reporting live in redwood city, christie smith, "today in the bay." sheriff deputies lifted evacuation orders for the entire town allowing hundreds of people to return home. the orders were issued about 3:30 yesterday afternoon when this old military ordinance was found in the city's business district. take a look at this thing. close to 700 homes and businesses. they were all evacuated, including several hotels and air force ordinance disposal unit was hoping to call in to deal with this item. no word yet on how it ended up

this overnight crash. the intersection of almaden expressway and coleman is closed as police are still at the scene. "today in the bay" bob redell just spoke to investigators and joins us live with the very latest information. good morning, bob. >> good morning, laura. the traffic investigator just arrived out here and what we're gathering right now, the condition of one of the drivers is not looking very good. this happened just after midnight last night, one driver was going down almaden and the other across coleman when the cars collided. you can see there in the distance a black suburban that ended up against the pole. the other car in the field to the left. both men, the only people in the cars. they're in the hospital and one is in serious condition and the driver of the suburban that is in really bad shape. so bad that police aren't sure he's going to make it. that's why five and a half hours later this accident scene is still here.
5:32 am
the officers are trying to preserve the scene and they don't want to move the cars because if the man does die the department would have to up their investigation. so, they don't want to move anything out there that could hinder that investigation. hence the reason why this part of the intersection is still shut down. it's not a complete shut down of the intersection. you can still go southbound on almaden but coming northbound that direction is closed and going across on coleman is still not possible. i want to send over to our traffic anchor and, mike, what is the best way for commuters. this is a big commute area, what is the best way for people to get around this? >> you talked about one direction of almaden expressway and we'll get you oriented. bob, on the scene just south of highway 85 and we'll talk about the rest of the stuff on the south bay freeways. just south of highway 85. almaden expressway towards coleman and the northbound side heading towards 85, that's

5:35 am
onboard. they tried to help them, but, again, one person has died. in all we're told that five people were onboard and those that weren't injured helped free the boat and were able to help bring it back in. we have not yet learned information about the person who died, again, redwood city police are the lead agency in this and we do have colonize to them. as i hear from them, i'll let you know what they had to say. chri chri christie smith, "today in the bay." firefighters in san francisco say it could take days to pinpoint the cause of a deadly fire. this cell phone video shows those flames just shooting through a window and a roof at the sunnydale public housing development. firefighters found a 32-year-old woman dead inside. her 3-year-old son was rushed to the hospital. where, sadly, he also died a short time later. the building was built in the
